About the team

As the Finance General Manager you’ll be responsible for managing all of Amber’s finances and will be a key part of the exec team which includes the Co-CEOs/co-founders, the CTO and CMO. You’ll be reporting directly to the Co-CEO.

Job Description

As Finance GM you will be responsible for:

  • Overseeing Amber’s finances and managing the financial accounts to monitor Amber’s actual performance compared to the forecasted financial position and managing Amber’s cash flow. 
  • Analysing and designing our pathway to profitability through forecasting Amber’s growth, unit economics, fixed costs, breakeven point, runway and total future capital requirements.
  • Defining and developing the systems to track the key financial and non-financial metrics to measure Amber’s performance (e.g. Customer lifetime value / Customer Acquisition Costs, % of power from renewable sources compared to the grid, % of customers saving more with Amber than they could anywhere else)
  • Designing and implementing an efficient hedging strategy to ensure that Amber is not exposed to material wholesale market risk in guaranteeing customers will never pay more than our price cap over a 12 month period. 
  • Structuring and securing cost-efficient sources of capital to meet Amber’s prudential requirements with the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO). This will include structuring and negotiating the debt, bank guarantee and/or reallocations contracts to share risk appropriately and minimise Amber’s cost of capital.
  • Structuring and negotiating contracts with smart device companies to allow Amber to increase both revenue and customer savings through optimisation services and commissions on smart device sales.
  • Ensure Amber is compliant with Australian Energy Regulator (AER) and Essential Service Commission (ESC) regulations such as the Default Market Offer (DMO), Victorian Default Market Offer (VDO) and Retailer Reliability Obligation (RRO).   
  • Supporting Amber’s application for an electricity retail license and supporting Amber’s capital raising processes. 
  • Starting as an individual contributor, but with a view to build out our Finance capabilities and team over the next 1-2 years.

This is a full-time role based in our Melbourne CBD office.

About You


  • You’re passionate about helping customers and the planet. You’re relentlessly optimistic about your ability to impact the world. 
  • You have 4+ years experience in top consulting firms, investment banking or senior finance roles in high performing start-ups, corporates or NFPs. 
  • Your curious about the world, how things work and strive to understand problems from first principles. 
  • You thrive in uncertain situations but are always trying to put structure around things. 
  • You want a challenge and are excited about working in a high growth start up where your contributions will have a big impact. ‍
  • Experience and knowledge of the electricity sectors, wholesale energy markets, electricity market regulations and demand flexibility programs would be highly regarded.
